Mr. Giusepe Laviano has recently joined the SWOP Board of Directors as our Marketing Director. For over 15 years, Mr. Laviano has worked in progressive marketing roles in the business to business space. Most recently, as the Manager – Marketing, Branding and Advertising at AK Steel in West Chester, OH, where he led a team that relaunched the corporate website, modernized the company’s brand and reshaped the view of steel in the customer’s eyes. He is a member of the American Marketing Association and currently the Treasurer of the International Association of Businesses Communicators – Washington, DC. He holds an MBA from DePaul University and two engineering degrees from Syracuse University and currently resides in Washington, DC.
Dana has been retired since March 2019 after a 42-year career as an accountant/financial analyst with AK Steel corporation. Upon completion of his bachelor’s degree in business from Indiana University Dana began working at Armco Steel, which later became AK Steel. Within a few years of starting work at Armco Steel Dana passed the CPA exam and earned a master’s degree in business administration from Xavier University. Although he worked professionally as an accountant Dana was also passionate about playing clarinet. In high school Dana was a member of the All-Connecticut Band and Orchestra, the All-Eastern Band and Orchestra and the McDonalds All-American Band. His private teachers included members of the Hartford Symphony, the American Symphony, the New York Philharmonic and the Cincinnati Symphony. For twenty years Dana played first clarinet in the Middletown Symphony and performed the Mozart Clarinet Concerto with the orchestra. Dana has also been a guest performer with the Hamilton Symphony and the Cincinnati Ballet Orchestra. Dana is currently performing with Southwest Ohio Philharmonic.
The Southwest Ohio Philharmonic, Inc. (SWOP) was founded on Dec. 2, 2016 by interested musicians of the Middletown Symphony Orchestra. Core founders were Joanne Shaffer, Michael L. Shaffer and Renate W. Thomas with Carmon DeLeone as the organization’s first Music Advisor. Current board members are: William Albin, Mike Arnold, Dora Bronston, Jacquelyn Davis, Matthew Dixon, Tera Hamilton, Dana Kolovson, Giuseppe Laviano, Gary Rasmussen, Pam Rauch, Peter Rauch, Michael L. Shaffer, Fred Thiergartner, Genie Thiergartner and Renate W. Thomas.
As the Middletown Symphony Orchestra celebrated their final 75th season (2016-2017), the MSO musicians started making plans to continue to bring symphonic music to the area communities through the founding of this new philharmonic. SWOP's first concert was performed on Labor Day of 2017 at the Woodside Arboretum in Middletown, Ohio. The Philharmonic has also made plans to develop a partnership with area colleges and universities giving music students the opportunity to work with SWOP’s Board of Directors and professional musician
Our vision, “To Touch Everyone with Music”, is the main goal of the Southwest Ohio Philharmonic as we reach out to all communities of southwest Ohio.
